Scala Dei: The Birthplace of Priorat

Scala Dei is a legendary winery located in Spain’s Priorat region, and it holds the distinction of being the producer of the first wines from Priorat, dating back to the 12th century. Founded around the historic Scala Dei Monastery, the winery’s roots are deeply intertwined with the Carthusian monks who first introduced winemaking to the region. Scala Dei’s vineyards, some of the highest in Priorat, are situated on steep, rocky slopes, benefiting from the region’s unique terroir of slate-rich soils (locally known as “llicorella”) and extreme temperature variations, which give the wines their intense character and structure.
